After 9 years of dreaming-up and planning-out a 6 shipping container home, the stars have finally aligned! We sold our home with 6 acres and purchased a 100 year old farm house on 60 acres next door. We quit our jobs…..no wait we couldn’t but that would be nice!!! Ian and I own a small glass company he started in his 20’s, and have 2 kids in school and sports. So we juggle it all while trying to build this house in our spare time. From tearing down our existing home to completion of our new one get a front row, detailed view on how we do it. This is a channel for everyone, from the do it yourself’er to the person who contracts it out. Learn from our mistakes and share in our victories!

OUR PROJECT
Why Did We Frame Our Container home?
When we decided to spray foam on the outside of our container home people asked us why we decided to exposed the container walls on the inside vs the outside. Our decision was based on Minnesota’s cold climate, and the preferred style we wanted to capture in our new living space. The spray foam will prevent thermal bridging from occurring on the interior of the container home. The result is an energy efficient home that will reduce our utility costs. The other benefit is that the exposed container complements the polished concrete floors for a unique industrial style that suits our style and climate.

WHY BUILD A CONTAINER HOME?
A shipping container home is a dwelling made from steel shipping containers—large reusable intermodal containers that transport goods. Shipping containers are available in two sizes: 20 feet by 8 feet or 40 feet x 8 feet: The 20-foot containers are 160 square feet, while the 40-foot shipping containers offer 320 square feet of living space.
